This course provides additional information on sharps safety, beyond what is covered in the Bloodborne Pathogens training.

More than eight million healthcare workers in the USA work in hospitals, aged care, pharmacies and other health care settings. Precise national data are not available on the annual number of needlestick and other percutaneous injuries among health care workers; but estimates indicate that 600,000 to 800,000 injuries occur annually.

The majority of needlestick injuries reported involve nursing staff; but laboratory staff, clinicians, vaccinators, physicians, housekeepers, and other health care workers are also injured. Some of these injuries expose workers to bloodborne pathogens that may cause infection.

This course takes a closer look at the ways in which healthcare workers and others at risk of exposure can help prevent needlestick and sharps injuries. This course is particularly relevant to staff who have been employed at vaccination site centers in regional hibs, pharmacies and other locations to assist in COVID-19 vaccination efforts but may not have formal medical training.
